How to film a self-tape
As a theater major with a concentration in acting, I felt qualified to walk viewers through the process of filming a self tape. I made the choice to create the video for people who have never filmed a self tape, as opposed to actors looking to refine their existing set up. No specific equipment is needed to follow along with the video. The goal is to make is accessible to anyone watching it and there for make it worth it for anyone who watches it.
In the Christine T. Wolf article, DIY Videos on youtube, Wolf explores the way the algorithm of youtube works and how people come across videos. She is quoted saying, "Algorithmic processing has the power to — whether intentional or not — manipulate social relationships and institutions" (Wolf 1). This means that the algorithm has almost soul power over what is seen and what isn't. In my opinion, that's a bit dystopian to think about.
For this reason, I opted to title my video something straightforward. The algorithm may not be in my favor, however titling my video the exact question that'll be typed into google gives me a better chance at having my video be pushed out and recommended. I believe I created a very helpful video and am hoping I did the necessary steps for it to be seen.
I invite you all to sit back and watch this light hearted How-to. If you feel compelled to use it for its intention, make sure you have a blank, well lit wall and something to prop your phone up. Please feel free to send me any videos you create using this method (gc784@scarletmail.rutgers.us).
Happy filming!
